| This is a "how to" workshop. Its purpose is to help project teams succeed in improving quality and productivity, and in all their efforts to improve processes. Those who are responsible for establishing such projects will find suggestions on how to set up the project and assign the team. Managers who establish a project will learn what to look for as the project unfolds. Those who take part in the project as team leaders, team members, or in some technical advisory role will learn the larger context within which to see their effort. Those directly involved in projects will find detailed recommendations on how to proceed through the project's many phases. Our approach to projects differs from more conventional approaches in three ways: First, our approach is focused on the pursuit of Quality as presented by Dr. W. E. Deming, the founder of the new economic and industrial era. Second, our approach relies heavily on the understanding and application of data. These data-based methods draw from the discipline of statistics and classical logic. Third, we include methods for the formation and maintenance of groups, the planning and managing of projects, and the design and conduct of meetings. It is our strong conviction that for a project team to succeed in its task, it needs much more than technical knowledge of the work area under investigation. Expertise in the subject at hand is indispensable. But participants in a successful project must also know how to work as a team, plan, conduct good meetings, manage logistics and details, gather useful data, analyze the data, communicate the results and implement changes. |
