Workshops, Seminars and Conference Presentations ***

--(1)  Eight Steps Toward Healthy Expectations for Expecting Couples (4 hour program intended for
health care professionals and can be modified for a general audience)

This presentation dynamically reviews the rapid changes men and couples confront during
pregnancy. Although every pregnancy begins with hope, many couples find their dreams become
hopeless as the experience unfolds. Based on one of the most comprehensive studies of expectant
father behavior conducted, Dr. Rodriguez suggests methods to recognize and intervene when
working in this high risk situation. These four sessions, which can be scheduled over one weekend,
that explore and educate expectant couples about their differing individual expectations and offers
techniques on making these differences work to their advantage.

--(2)
What to Expect from the Expectant Father (2 to 4 CEU nursing, social welfare, counselors,
therapists). A presentation that explores the changing behavior in expectant fathers and couples. A
variety of techniques, guidelines, and insights are offered about engaging the father and couple in
the pregnancy experience, methods for early identification of behavioral issues, specific
communication approaches that can be used with expectant and new fathers, ways to instill
confidence in the newly delivered couple, and techniques of dealing with combative and disruptive
behavior during the pregnancy and delivery.

The seminar uses lecture and open discussion to achieve the objectives. Handouts are provided on
the key points of the presentation and are available at the close of the session.

Violence and Pregnancy: How It Starts and How To Stop It

--(4)  A Review of the Behavioral Changes for the Expectant Father (also offered as a two hour
program for expectant fathers and as a series of 4 two hour sessions for parenting classes and
couples)

The History of Fatherhood in America (2 hour presentation) For a copy of A Brief History of

--(6)
Train the Trainers on developing an educational and intervention program for expectant
couples
(This is a capstone program in which health care professionals are shown how
to plan, implement, and manage a prenatal behavioral program for expectant
couples. Emphasis is placed on the needs of the expectant father. However, balancing
the needs of the couple is thoroughly explored. Workshop materials are provided.
Significant to this workshop is the financial reward returned to the hospital or health
care organization of implementation. Important reasons for implementing the
program are both the benefits to the client and the benefit to the health care
organization). The workshop last one to two full days.
