to abandon that traditional model and scale back to become more efficient
and economically viable. Looking forward, one of the biggest challenges
health care executives will face is committing to and handling the
elimination of marginally producing service lines. The key is to trim down
prior to a directive from consultants in response to a financial crisis, an
eleventh-hour mandate from the board of directors, or a coerced
downsizing prompted by a temporary turnaround firm. This type of rapid-
fire downsizing, either in terms of personnel or product lines, is overly
reactive and usually suboptimal”.
